Festivals and popular traditions

The city of Mataró has, in its popular festivals, the liveliest example of its cultural heritage. Events of ancient tradition and recent festivals provide a cultural offer for everybody.

Les Santes (The Saints). The National Festival par excellence of Mataró and in relation to our country. In honnor to the saints Juliana and Semproniana, patronesses saints of the city. During the days of the festival the people from Mataró attend the events and feel the constant presence of the giants and the rest of the masquerades in the street with a lot of intensity. The main day is July the 27th, when acts like the traditional Mess of the Saints take place in the basilica of Santa Maria and also de Fireworks in the beach. There are also some other important acts:  la Nit Boja, amb el Desvetllament Bellugós, l'Escapada Negra a Nit i la Ruixada; el Sarau al passeig marítim; el ball dels Requisits de Festa Major; la Revolta dels Nans; la Xeringada; el concert de Barram; la diada castellera amb la colla amfitriona els Capgrossos de Mataró; el No n’hi ha prou! que torna a treure les figures a ballar de matinada; l’Anem a tancar, l’última cercavila amb les comparses mataronines, amongst other activities. 

Festivals of streets and neighbourhoods. From May to October some neighbourhoods and some streets of the city celebrate their popular festivals, some of them are as traditional as the ones of Sant Simó where you can buy the traditional Sabre (Sword), a sugary marzipan dessert  shaped as this weapon.

Easter Processions. More than ten religious acts in different places of the city define Easter in Mataró; it unites all the fraternities, brotherhoods and Armed (roman peace soldiers) of Mataró, in one of the events with more followers. Each fraternity has its processions in which they show their mysteries, but there is one event, the procession of  "Divendres Sant" , that gathers them all in a single route.
