Music, Cinema, Theatre and Dance
Mataró has become a point of reference for permanent programming of theater, dance, music and cinema in the Maresme area. Tradition and modernity are merged in the stages of the city.
Ancient Music Week. Once a year, Mataró organizes a week of concerts, auditions and conferences devoted to classical music and the venue is the "Basílica de Santa Maria" (The Basilica of Saint Mary).
Els pastorets de Mataró (Catalan Christmas theatre play). One of the most treasured Christmas traditions of the city is the theatre play "Els Pastorets" (The little Shepherds). It has all the characteristcs of traditional theater, with orchestra and live chants, dances, scenography changes, good and evil characters, drama and comedy, and special effects with fire. A collective show, with more than 300 amateur actors, for the whole family to enjoy. In 1981, it was declared Cultural Heritage of the City, because of its singularity and its cultural and traditional values.
International Dance Day. This event is suitable for all audiences and combines professional shows with performances of young students from the Teatre de l’Institut Municipal d’Acció Cultural . It can be seen in different places in the streets of Mataró, in the teatre Monumental or in the city's Parc Central.
