"Les Santes", Mataró City Festival
July 27th is the patron saints's day of Mataró, Saint Juliana and Saint Semproniana. That is why the City Festival is called "Les Santes" (The Saints). During the festival days the people from Mataró attend the differet events and feel with intensity the constant presence of the giants and the other masquerades around the streets of the city.
We can talk about four phases in the festival of "Les Santes":
- The hall. The lobby of the Party. Year after year, some events have become a part of the Festival, the art exhibition in Sant Pere Més Alt Street, the "Gegantada" (Giants parade), the "Diada castellera" (building human castles) celebrated the previous weekend (the 27th). The "habaneras " (fishermen's songs) and burnt rum at the beach on July 24th at night are the ones that prepare the perfect festival atmosphere before the party.
- The Call. The festival officially starts on July 25th. The first events are the masquerades and some other typical events of "Les Santes". At 19:45 the masquerades of the city walk from different places of the city to the City council, where the mayor and the consistory will inaugurate the festival and invite the citizens to have fun in it . The first balls with the Giants and the masquerades are the most anticipated and celebrated. The night of the 25th is Crazy Night: the name shows the intensity of the events that follow during the most anticipated nights of the year.
Like every year, at 23:30 the Robafaves Family leave the City council to dance and jump together to the sound of the bequetero, the original soundtrack of "Les Santes". Down the "Riera" there is the Guests of the Robafaves Family, an hour of music, drinks and cookies at Santa Anna Square. Afterwards, at 1 o'clock, the Robafaves Family goes back to the "Riera" followed by the crowd. After the Giants have entered the City Council the fireworks of the City council start and, then, the longest and most powerful fireworks parade of the year takes place, the "Escapada a negra nit; and after the fireworks parade, comes the water. Once the Fireworks parade has finished, the "Ruixada" of the Central Park , music and dance bathed in water, where many people from all over the region meet .The next day, July 26th, the "vermut i de barram",concerts, the bells concert and the Festival Ball are the main events of the night before the festival starts, which will lead to the beginning of the Party.
- The Patron Saints Day. July 27th, patron Saints day of the city, Saint Juliana and Saint Semproniana, the most solemn events and rituals are held. The "anada a ofici" of the masquerades and authorities in the early morning, the The Saints Mass in "Santa Maria", the "Passada" in the afternoon and the "castell de focs i sarau" on the promenade at night are the events nobody wants to miss . There are also some important events of the Festival on the 26th: the visit of the masquerades and the "sardanes" (Catalan dance) in the "Residència Sant Josep", the "Ball dels Requisits de la Festa Major" and the "No n'hi ha prou!" which makes the giants come out to dance again, late at night.
- The epilogue of "Les Santes" are the last events of the festival: the "vesprada ball" ; the "Anem a tancar" , the final parade with the masquerades of Mataró; the Tronada de fi de festa, an intense farewell with gunpowder and the Espetec Final, the evening ball which doesn't end until the sun comes up, a communal Albada and chocolate bathing.
