Where to eat?

The geographical location of Mataró, between the Mediterranean sea and the littoral mountain range, and its tempered climate, have made it possible for the city, since long ago, to have an agricultural tradition specialized in Mediterranean cultivation (wheat, vineyard and olive trees) and in horticultural products of the area such as lettuces, radishes, broad beans, beans (a special kind of bean called "mongetes del ganxet") or peas, "the green pearl". Apart from this agricultural tradition, Mataró is also characterized by a long seafaring tradition which allows many restaurants of the city to have fresh quality products. We cannot forget, however, one of the products that has become more and more established throughout history: the potato; with origin denomination and commonly known as Mataró's Potatoes, they were massively exported, mainly to the British markets, in the middle of the 20th century. This combination of sea and mountain provides Mataró with a first class gastronomic offer made by elaborating the autochthonous products of the city.

Gastronomic day
Mataró's typical dish is the result of this gastronomic variety: cuttlefish with peas and potatoes, a stew with Mediterranean food. There is a day in honor of this stew in spring. A Jornades Gastronòmiques del Plat de Mataró( Gastronomic day of Mataró's typical dish) and a contest of Mataró's typical dish are held every year; they are organized by the Gremi d’Hostaleria i Turisme de Mataró i el Maresme, and there are about thirty restaurants that take part in the cooking contest.

Mushrooms and tomatoes are the other gastronomic protagonists of the city; A Jornades Gastronòmiques dels Bolets (Gastronomic day of the Mushroom) is held in autmn and a Jornades Gastronòmiques del Tomàquet (Gastronomic day of the Tomato), is held in summer, when several restaurants offer dishes and menus elaborated with these products.
