Fort Lauderdale

In 2014, Mataró established its most recent town twinning with the city of Fort Lauderdale in order to strengthen the economic, business, academic and cultural bonds between the two cities.

The city of Fort Lauderdale has a population of around 169,000 inhabitants and it is the county seat of Broward County in the South Florida metropolitan area (USA). Its similarities with the city of Mataró are relevant: its coastal location and its nautical sector; its privileged climate and its economic dynamism, which make it a great place to live, to start a business and to work. It is also close to a major city (only 44 km from Miami), it houses university centres, its economy is tourism-oriented, it has an important community and Latin influence and it is an important logistic centre for nearby areas like the Caribbean, and South and North America.

The Fort Lauderdale twinning is unique for it is the first time that we establish a sister city partnership with an American city, as part of a strategic goal to position Mataró globally, based on all the mentioned similarities and specially focusing on four lines of development:

• Business and economic development: the mutual programs to foster internationalisation and business innovation.

• Seafront and Harbour: the search for synergies between the respective harbours and nautical clusters.

• Education: the academic collaboration between university institutions and in terms of professional training between the two cities.

• Culture and history: Latin tradition from the South Florida area and cultural relationship with Catalonia, specially through the wide and powerful Cuban community.

As the new Fort Lauderdale sister city Mataró has joined the ‘Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International’, a network of 17 cities around the world dedicated to creating partnerships in an effort to increase global cooperation on many levels and to develop joint programmes. The cities that belong to this club are: Agogo (Ghana), Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Cap-Haitien (Haiti), Gold Coast (Australia), Haifa (Israel), Kaohsiung City (Taiwan), La Romana (Dominican Republic), Mar del Plata (Argentina), Margarita Island (Venezuela), Medellin (Colombia), Mugla (Turkey), Panama City (Panama), Quepos (Costa Rica), Rimini (Italy), Sao Sebastiao (Brazil) and Venice (Italy).
